Soft bite language: Generation can add current near dam-end points / riverine edges; most of the lake fishes as clear storage finesse regardless. Never fish restricted turbine/spillway water; cold rapid rises in the Sipsey Fork below the dam are a separate hazard story.
Bass life stage
Late summer on a clear deep storage lake, midway through the July–November drawdown season by calendar (confirm with live elev, not assumed feet-per-day). Spotted bass remain the identity fish; largemouth still available on shoreline wood/rock in creek arms. Not spawn. Fall surface schooling on shad/herring is a late September–November story that may start soon — not confirmed as “on” every day yet.
How to fish (bass)
- Dawn–9 AM: Shade docks, blowdowns, and rocky points with topwater, fluke, or a light spinnerbait; keep a dropshot / Ned ready for the first deeper dock corner.
- Midday: Slow finesse — dropshot, shaky head, small swimbait, or deep crank on main-lake points, saddles, and humps where bait shows. Clear water = lighter line / natural colors.
- Creek arms after rain stain: Slightly more aggressive profiles (spinnerbait, chatter) on the stain line.
- Evening (8–11 PM gen window Sat–Sun): If you fish the dam / Walker corridor, use the APC schedule as a soft current cue on legal points — not an excuse to enter restricted zones.
- Drawdown note: Lower pool can change ramp/dock usability — check your ramp before trailering a deep-draft boat into a marginal cut.
What’s on the menu / Natural forage
Most likely (season + lake type; thin dated Sept reports): Threadfin/gizzard shad and, on Smith, periodic blueback herring school stories in angler journalism for spots and stripers; crawfish on rock/bluff; bream in shallow timber pockets.
This weekend: No fresh guide note naming a specific hatch — forage unconfirmed; fish shad/herring profiles offshore and craw/finesse on rock. OA notes live shad as preferred for stripers when targeting them.
