Soft bite language: Outdoor Alabama notes hydropower generation highly influences bass success on Jones Bluff — especially Alabama bass on current — while largemouth in backwaters feel generation much less. Soft framing only; never MW/cfs “rules.” Stay out of restricted discharge / lock danger zones.
Bass life stage
Late summer / early fall on a run-of-river Alabama River chain. Spotted / Alabama bass remain the current-oriented story on the main river; largemouth hold sloughs, flooded creeks, and wood. Not a spawn window. Fall shad pushes deepen as nights cool over the next 1–3 weeks.
How to fish (bass) — labeled pools
Woodruff (Jones Bluff / R.F. Henry)
- During Henry generation: Fish river ledges, bluff walls, riprap, current breaks, and wood hung on seams with cranks then a football jig. OA + late-summer features emphasize current as the feeding switch for Alabama/spotted bass.
- When current is off: Slow down or rotate to creek mouths / slough LMB rather than forcing a dead main-river ledge for hours.
- Upper river toward Coosa–Tallapoosa junction / Cooter’s Pond corridor remains classic spot water when flow is present (seasonal journalism — verify access live).
Millers Ferry (Dannelly)
- Main river: Same spot / current-break play during Millers Ferry generation (convert Eastern schedule to CT).
- Backwaters: OA names productive LMB areas such as Alligator Slough, Houseboat Slough, Pine Barren, Gee’s Bend, Foster Creek — wood, shade, slower water while the main river runs.
- Do not assume Henry’s hours equal Millers Ferry’s hours — pull both.
What’s on the menu / Natural forage
OA habitat language: Woodruff — abundant small shad; Millers Ferry — relatively stable threadfin shad. Late-summer journalism ties ledge spots to shad depth plus crawfish on rock/bluffs.
This weekend: No fresh dated forage/hatch report for either pool — forage unconfirmed; most likely = shad on current/channel + craw profiles on rock/bluff + bream around shallow wood for LMB. Match cranks/jigs accordingly. Do not invent a mayfly or herring hatch.
Lures (bass)
- Medium–deep diving crank (shad) — parallel ledges when generating.
- ¾ oz football jig (green pumpkin / brown) — after the crank marks fish.
- Shaky head / small worm — tough midday spots without much current.
- Squarebill — riprap and wood in current seams.
- Texas-rig creature — Millers Ferry / Woodruff slough wood for LMB.
- Spinnerbait (white/chartreuse) — stained backs after storms.
- Topwater walking bait — low-light river points if shad flick.
Also hot / also in season
- Crappie (especially Millers Ferry): OA highlights consistently good crappie; late summer is not the peak creek spawn — look deeper brush / creek channel wood, minnows or small jigs. Still worth a half-day if bass lock up.
- Catfish (channel / blue / flathead): Strong river reputation; Henry Dam and Millers Ferry tailwater areas historically productive — dam safety first, never fish restricted discharge.
- Hybrid / white bass / seasonal stripers: Soft mention around dam tailwaters when reports support; heat weekend = early/late.
- Bluegill / bream: Bank wood and shade.

Lookahead (1–3 weeks)
Cooler nights should improve morning topwater and begin a clearer shad/creek fall story on both pools. Keep pulling both plant schedules independently. Claiborne remains out of product unless manager expands the bundle.
